I didn't make myself clear. What type of injection is an SI joint injection? Is it done in a doc's office or in a surgery center? Do they use a floroscope like with ESI and nerve root blocks? What medication do they inject?

    Missy
Multiple spinal surgeries (10) beginning in 1982. Fusion L4-5 (1992), Dyneses rods after stenosis surgery L3-5 (2006). Fusion C6-7 (1993) and C5-6 (1999), Foraminotomy C4-5 (2008). Current problem L5-S1. MRI doesn't see anything, but the pain is consisitent to L5-S1.

    Hi Missy,

A SI joint injection can be done both in a physician's office (an outpatient setting) without a fluoroscope, or in an outpatient surgery center with a fluoroscope. The medication used is cortisone.

Make sure you go with an image-guided procedure (with a fluoroscope, as blind injections can be very dangerous).

    Great news, Justin.
Missy, i had my one SI injection under sedation and fluoroscope in a surgery center. It was a caudal injection, where the medicine is deposited right where the pain is.

Bumping my story up for a new SPS Member that emailed me.

I am doing well; working full-time in the hospital. It's great when I meet new people in the hospital and they ask why I decided to go into medicine...After I casually mention my spine history with 3 surgeries and many years of disability, I get the same response every time--a look of utter disbelief and a "I would have never known...you look so healthy...normal."

Feel free to email / private message me with any questions.
