hello
going in for nuvasive XL TDR next month in Spokane, Washington. Hoping someone could tell me how long recovery is, and post op pain.
Mike, It varies greatly from person to person on recovery. My suggestion would be to read several of the post op threads in surgical outcomes.

Pain and medication free as of October 2010!Mommy to Emma- 8 years, Ava- 6 years & had baby Eli after ADR, via c-section on March 25, 2011, completely pain free still!
Mike, what levels are you having done? While I had the XLIF, not TDR, my results were wonderful. I had the XLIF at L4/5 and ALIF at L5/S1, plus the NeoDisc at C5/6, all in one surgery. My biggest suggestion is to ask for an epidural during and the day after surgery. It eliminated a great deal of probable pain for me.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM. Mine was done by Dr. Luiz Pimenta in Brazil in March.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
Good stuffMy L4/5 was an easy-peasy level compared to the L5/S1. (I had an unexpected spondy at the bottom level that complicated things a bit)
I had a PEEK cage inserted at both levels with no reinforcement. I was up doing laundry in the bathroom sink on day 2/3 and doing lots of walking in the hallways. There was the normal incision pain, but other than that I recovered much easier and faster than I did with my hysterectomy seven years ago.
Good luck with everything.

Not to scare you, but I was in tremendous pain after my ADR. I seriously prayed to die for the first 2 days and I wasn't even on a ton of medication. I was on 60mg of Hydrocodone a day, had weaned off of the 40mcg of Kadian a day. I would definitely ask for the epidural during recovery. Katie had that and did really well, as do most that have it. Sadly, I am one of many that had uncontrollable post op pain.

Yeah, I have to agree with Kathy's post. I also had out of control pain after my 3 lumbar adr's....I suppose it's just best to be mentally prepared that the pain could be pretty high and ugly, and then if it's not, you can be pleasantly grateful. Katie had a phenomenal result to her invasive surgery, which is just outstanding, every time I hear her tell it. Just be careful not to take that as "the norm," imho.
