well i'm about 15 hrs out from surgery - my case was at 4pm Spain time on Wed. A little tough to sit up and type, so I'll keep it brief - kinda feels like a truck ran over my lower abd/back, but more dull aching than anything. Fitful sleep for a variety of reasons. PT coming shortly to get me up. All in all- much better than i was when i came out of anesthesia!!!
Dr Clavel said that my annulus was just destroyed on the left side - no way it was ever going to heal. Used a medium disc w/ 10 degrees of lordosis. No issues in surgery... now just gotta recover!

Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things. Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!
foley out, on soft diet. waiting for PT to come and get me out of bed. i want to be cleared to go to the bathroom!!!
not needing much in the way of pain meds - they do the equivalent of tylenol and toradol iv, plus tramadol. i just try to change positions frequently, that seems to help w/ the muscle spasms. those are letting up too. so far, relatively smooth!

thanks all, for the well-wishes. was released from the hospital today, right on schedule! am back at the apartment relaxing. will go out for a bit to see if i can handle some combo of sit/stand/walk enough to see part of a college football game - my alma mater is playing in the noon game on ESPN!
belly is still quite sore, and having some different muscle spasms - but none of the "old" pain thus far! oh, and i look 5-6 months pregnant. had a little belly from being unable to do much exercise, then the swelling from surgery.... it's really hot, i tell you. glad i heeded others' advice and brought some underwear a size too big!
no major complaints about my experiences with Dr Clavel and Hospital Quiron - Dr Clavel came by twice on Thurs, then once Fri b/c he was running late - his son fell and broke his leg! then today (Sat) to make sure everything was ok for me to go. will try to post my xrays at some point - will probably just have to take a photo since they're on paper and i don't have a scanner here.
apparently Spaniards don't eat much in the way of breakfast, and love coffee - totally the opposite of me! today i made it to the vending machine to supplement my breakfast with some sort of chocolate coated cereal bar.
