Default Message from Rosie in India (Lumbar Decompression)

As many of you know, our Rosie was suffering from ongoing pain for the past couple of years following ADR surgery. She consulted with a number of surgeons throughout the world, and decided to go to India for decompression surgery last week.

Instead of a single level, the surgeon found three levels of nerve compression. After a very successful surgery, she is now resting comfortably in a 'satellite' hospital meant for recuperation, about half an hour from the main one.

While the nerves are still quite irritated and she is on increased pain medication, she is now comfortable and expecting to be recovering nicely over the next week or two.

She wanted to thank everyone for their continued good wishes and asked that I be her go-between for any messages or questions. I am happy to do that; please just send me a PM if you have any direct questions about her surgery.
Severe compression of spinal cord, flaval ligament, etc. at C4/5 & 5/6.
Herniation and compression, at L3/4 to L5/S1 plus spondylosis at the latter level. Severe allergy to most metals.
Three level surgery in Brazil with Dr. Luiz Pimenta on March 17/2010 using non-metal appliances. L5/S1-PEEK cage, ALIF; L4/5-PEEK cage, XLIF; C5/6-NuVasive NeoDisc. Three separate approaches, two minimally invasive. Currently minor residual back pain, from SI ligament and still overdoing things . Therapy and chiropractic treatments helping immensely. Gone from being almost bedridden to near normal activities including gardening. Life is gooooood!

I am planning to go to India in March for 2 level disc replacement with the Prestige LP. Who was Rosie's surgeon? Mine is Dr. Rajakumar at Wockhardt in Bangalore.

Rosie's surgeon is Dr. Kulkarni in Bombay, and she is extremely pleased with his work. It was a toss-up whether or not to go to him or Dr. Pimenta, but she had family business in the area, so it made more sense to travel there to Dr. K.

She wanted me to pass on how well she is feeling and how much confidence she has in her treatment. jmichaeldail, she will have plenty of time to talk to you about traveling over there when she gets home in a couple of weeks. I know she will want to 'spread the good word' about her treatment there.

She had a decompression, with a cleaning out of her foramin (on her left side, I think), after having a hybrid surgery a couple of years ago here in Canada. She has been having leg and foot pain ever since her ADR surgery and worked hard to find the reason behind it, with varying ideas from several doctors. She followed her instincts about which one was correct and it appears that it is successful

I'll pass on all of your good wishes. It is greatly appreciated

I haven't heard from her in a couple of days, Rob, but will try and call her tonight. She is 10 1/2 hrs ahead of us, so I have to wait until almost midnight to call. Two days ago, she had increased her dose of Lyrica and started one other pain medication and was doing very well.

The first day after surgery, she was quite concerned because her nerve pain was quite high, but after discussing how much her nerves had been irritated with three levels being worked around, she agreed that she was expecting too much too soon. She talked to the surgeon about increasing her medication for a little while and the next day she was very comfortable.

If she had any problems, I'm sure I would have heard from her or her husband. He called me as soon as she was out of surgery to let me know all went well. Thanks for the reminder, and I will email her as well as call to make sure she knows we are thinking of her.

I just spoke to Rosie in India, 4 am my time, 2:30 pm her time ;-)

She was so pleased and surprised to receive all of your good wishes and wanted me to pass on her thanks.

Her pain is being controlled by Tramadol and Lyrica and apparently is just distraction pain now, that the compression pain is gone after the three level surgery. If anyone would like her phone number, she said it was fine to pass it out in case anyone was interested in the surgery. I think there was someone new here asking about it as they were going to India soon for treatment also.

She has a family function to attend in that part of the world before she comes home at the end of the month, and while it hurts, she is starting to do a fair bit of walking to gain back her strength. Rob, I think this information was directed to you in particular ;-)
