    Default Multi-level TLIF (T-11 to S2)

My name is Brent ,I am a 53y/o male from So. Indiana. I had a multi-level open TLIF in September 2006. Seven months later had revision surgery when pedicle screws became loose in S1. Screws were replaced with larger and two more installed lower in S2. I am now fused from T11-S2 with 18 pedicle screws, rods, crosslinks and couplings in my spine. I am well aware that things could always be worse and know they are for many people. I go to a PM clinic but can not handle many of the side effects and cost of the drugs. I am now on both ER and IR morphine which is starting to loose its effectiveness. I have also started to have problems in my Thoracic and Cervical spine. I joined this forum to see how others have learned to cope with the chronic pain, loss of lifestyle, mobility, etc., associated with our medical conditions. Family and friends can not truly understand what it is like to be in our situations. Thanks for letting me ramble and I look forward to any and all advice. Brent

Hi Brent. Welcome to the forum.

I haven't gone through a portion of what you have. I do remember the sleeplessness, anxiety and depression from being in continual pain. I made it through 3 years of it and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Just know you aren't alone. We'll be here for you if you need us.

Brent, sorry what you are going through. I have also not been through what you have; but can relate to the depression, family and financial stress it causes. You are right, no one can truly get what it is like to live in pain 24/7 unless they have been there- that's what is so great about this group, we are either there or have been there. Best wishes and welcome!

    Gday Brent,

Sorry to hear you have to endure such pain, it must be immensely challenging. You are right that is is a very rare family member or friend that understands, it makes it hard to relate to them sometimes.

I hope some of the stories here provide inspiration, and it's good just to talk to some people who are in it. Some brave people on this forum.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

    Brent,

It is tough. I take each day at a time and some days are worse. I take medications, meditate and try to concentrate on other things.
I hit a rough patch this week among all the other ones that I have been through. I have been sleeping on my ice pack, which helps.
I kind of have to know my limitations.
About three years of this, going on four mid next year.
My family is supportive but even my children don't quite understand.
Welcome to the forum, which can be one of those helpful distractions. A lot of people on here to help.

I'm a huge ice packer myself. I sleep with one too runagain. Have one on my low back as I type this. All in all, I must have a good 7, maybe 8, and I just rotate them all day. Just call me ICE WOMAN.

    Hello Brent
You have found a terrific group here . There's so much information and everyone here is wonderful.I have to agree with Cindylou that Ice is a wonderful tool in dealing with back pain. I use it daily as well at bedtime in order to get some sleep. My hubby's on going joke is " Your as cold as Ice " HaHa better than being "Hot as Hell" !! I also found investing in some really good Ice Packs is a good investment.(The PeaPod Therapy Ice Packs are wonderful) They conform to your body ,freeze fast and are reasonable. One of the biggest factors in all of this is finding the right coping skills that work for you. It's takes a little Trial and Error but the benefits sure can make the difference. I wish you the best of luck and pain free days.If I can help you with anyone questions give me a shout out.Everyone here is so understanding and helpful I'm sure this will be a great in helping you find your way thru this time in your life.
