Default NuVasive XL TDR® (Total Disc Replacement)

Hi I am new to this and just found it today (the day before my surgery)
I am participating in Nuvasives trial for the XL TDR and will be the first patient
to receive it in Texas. I'm very nervous, but have great confidence in my surgeons.
Will let you all know how it works out in the end for me. Hopefully great!!!!
Be back online after a few days. Anyone else have this done yet? I hear there are
    only a handful so far.

Wow, Jennifer! This is great news! Welcome to the Spine Patient Society! We are glad you are here and that you found us before your surgery tomorrow.

Are you having your surgery with Dr. Dryer? I believe he is the Primary Investigator in Texas. The NuVasive XL Total Disc Replacement looks like a very promising device and the surgical approach makes a lot of sense.

Here's some information for SPS Members about Nuvasive's eXtreme Lateral Total Disc Replacement:

    1. XL TDR® eXtreme Lateral Total Disc Replacement for the Treatment of Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) at ClinicTrials
    2. NuVasive XL TDR® Website

You'll be on the other side of surgery before you know it! I'm excited to read about your successful surgery. Please keep us posted on your progress, as we do care. We are here to support you!

    Hi,

Dr. Wupperman and Dr. Dryer will be my surgeons. I feel a bit like a guinea pig, but what a great opportunity. Thanks for the support! I'll catch up when I'm up to par and let everyone know of my experience.

    Hi all,

My surgery was on the 28th and went extremely well!!! The device fit in place just right and had quite some pain after, but mainly because the nurses have you up every 2 hours to walk. Dr. Wupperman and Dr. Dryer are top notch and the gals from Nuvasive were a wealth of knowledge. I was extremely blessed as I knew nothing about any type of back surgery just lived with horrible pain from two really bad horse accidents that blew out my disc (the last time). I'm the first in Texas to have the implant so far and go for my post-op appointment tomorrow. I am excited too that I could participate in the study if it can in any way improve the quality and (quicker recovery) for people like me who are still and want to remain active. Ok...can't sit for too long. Gotta walk, then rest! Any questions please ask....we'll all see how i turn out!

    Congrats, JenniferC!

I am so excited for you. Please keep us posted on your progress. I am anxious to hear your thoughts on this device.

I have a question for Justin and it is somewhat related to this Nuvasive device. Justin, I noticed in your signature, that you mention something about an L5/L6 and that it is considered a lumbrosacral transitional vertabrae. I was also diagonosed with this (which is my problem area).

For this Nuvasive device, the clinical trial blurb states that they only go down as far as the L5 vertabrae and that everything below that excludes you from the trial. With that in mind, do you know if they would consider a lumbrosacral transitional vertabrae?

My understanding for why they do not want to go below the L5 vertebrae is b/c when they get that low, they have to enter via anterior sugery whereas if it above L5, then they peform the surgery anterior....ly (is that a word?).

The was similar to the Nubac clinical trial in that they would only go down to the L5 as well, but both devices seem promising to me and I hate that I fall out of their inclusion criteria.
